Getting started

First hour. Project, account, keys.

Welcome to WriteLoom

WriteLoom is a single workspace for the whole arc of a book, outlining, drafting, editing, layout, pitching, launching. The same project sits behind every studio so your synopsis, characters, comps, cover, and outreach notes are visible everywhere they're relevant.

You don't have to use every studio. Start where you are: idea, mid-draft, or finished manuscript. The studios you don't need yet stay out of your way.

Creating your first project

From the dashboard, click "New project." Give it a working title (you can change this later) and pick a work format, novel, short fiction, memoir, screenplay, poetry, and so on. The format you pick configures the editor, the export pipeline, and which studios show up.

If you already have a draft, you can upload it on the next screen, see Manuscripts → Uploading a manuscript for the supported formats and what happens on import. If you're starting from scratch, the Plan studio opens by default so you can lay down beats and characters before turning to Write.

Account setup

Open the account menu (top right) → Profile. Set your display name, your time zone, and your preferred contact email. The email is also where billing receipts and the (optional) launch-day reminders go.

Two-factor authentication is under Account → Security. We support TOTP authenticator apps (Google Authenticator, 1Password, Authy, Bitwarden, or any RFC-6238 app). Scan the QR code on the Security page, enter the 6-digit code your app shows you, and from that point on every sign-in requires both your password and a fresh code. To remove a factor later, you must already be signed in with MFA active (so a stolen password can't disable MFA on its own).

API keys 101

Most things in WriteLoom don't require any key from you. AI usage is included in the subscription with no per-call billing, but the AI surface area is tier-bound: on Spool the only AI tools are the author-bio builder and the general help bot, while Loom and Tapestry unlock AI across every studio.

The single exception is audiobook generation, which runs on your own ElevenLabs API key. ElevenLabs charges by character of speech generated, so we hand that line item to you directly so you can control it. Add the key under Account → API keys; it's encrypted at rest and never appears in logs.

If you're an admin on a Team plan, your members inherit subscription-included AI but each member adds their own ElevenLabs key if they want to use the audiobook tool.
