Why is WriteLoom more expensive than other writing tools?
Three reasons, briefly. Model quality. We don't use whatever's cheapest behind the scenes, we route each studio to the model and configuration that's actually best for that task (different model for chapter drafting vs. line editing vs. cover critique, with prompt scaffolding tuned on real writers' manuscripts). Most competitors hand the same general-purpose model the same generic prompt across every feature. AI usage included. The token cost you normally pay separately is bundled into your subscription; on Loom that's a 1,000,000-token monthly budget with 1-month rollover, on Tapestry it's uncapped. Real customer service. Email replies in hours, not days, from people who've actually used the platform for more, not a ticket queue that closes itself after 30 days of silence. We'd rather be a little more expensive and deserve the price than race competitors to the bottom.
Why a subscription instead of a one-time purchase?
A few writing tools sell a one-time license, and that model fits software that just sits on your computer. WriteLoom isn't that. Your subscription covers real recurring costs: the AI that drafts, edits, and critiques (every run costs us to produce), hosting and backing up your manuscripts, and a steady stream of new studios and fixes. It also pays for support from people who actually use the platform. You're never locked in, though — everything exports to standard formats any time, and if you stop paying you drop to Thread, free forever, with your work intact.
How does the free trial work?
Every new account starts with 7 days of Loom, our full-AI tier — 1,000,000 AI tokens and 50 image generations, no card required. When the 7 days end, if you haven't chosen a paid plan you settle onto the free Thread plan automatically; your account, manuscripts, and exports stay with you.
Is there a free plan?
Yes, Thread is free forever. It includes the full Write studio, the AI author-bio builder, PDF export, media storage, and 25 MB of account storage. The AI writing assistant and the other studios unlock on paid tiers.
Do I have to bring my own API keys?
AI usage is included with paid subscriptions, no per-call billing, no separate AI bill. The one exception is audiobook generation, which uses your own ElevenLabs API key (ElevenLabs charges by character).
What does the monthly token limit actually mean?
Tokens are how AI models measure text. Very roughly, 1,000,000 tokens is around 750,000 words of work — counting everything the AI reads (your manuscript, plan notes, and context) plus everything it writes (drafts, edits, critiques). Spool includes 100,000 tokens per month (~75K words of AI work, no rollover), enough for a chapter or two and some research; Loom includes 1,000,000 (~750K words, rolls over one month) for a month of heavy drafting and several editing passes. Run out of Loom tokens early? Top up another 1,000,000 for $10 anytime, or move up to Tapestry, which removes the cap entirely.
Is this only for novelists?
No. WriteLoom supports novels, short fiction, memoir, nonfiction books, essays and journalism, academic writing, screenplays, TV pilots, stage plays, graphic novels, comics, picture books, poetry, songwriting, game narratives, interactive fiction, cookbooks, and technical manuals.
Is the AI required?
No. Every AI feature is optional and can be turned off, and the manual modes (list-builders, comp tracker, marketing calendar, submission organizer, reviewer database, Plan, Media, and Design studios) work fully without ever calling a model. Spool opens every AI feature on a small monthly allowance (100K tokens, 10 image generations) for writers who want a light hand of AI; Loom adds serious headroom.
What happens to my work if I cancel a paid plan?
You drop back to the free Thread plan, keeping your account and your manuscripts. The paid studios (Plan, Edit, Pitch, Sell, Market, Design) pause until you resubscribe. If a Thread account is inactive for 6 consecutive months, projects are removed.

Refunds are available within 3 days of any paid charge. No prorating after that window.
