Because it can only read a limited amount of text at once. Once your conversation outgrows that limit, the earliest material stops being visible to the model, so details from your opening chapters quietly stop shaping its answers. It does not tell you this has happened; the replies simply get less consistent with the book.

Writers usually diagnose this as the tool getting worse, or as their own prompting failing. It is neither. It is a hard architectural limit, and understanding it changes how you work: you stop expecting the tool to remember, and start deciding deliberately what it should see each time.

- A short story bible you can re-supply: premise, cast, rules, timeline.
- A per-chapter summary so the model can see shape without the full text.
- Fresh conversations per task, rather than one endless thread.
- A continuity check at revision that does not rely on the tool’s memory.
- A system of record for facts about your book that is not a chat log.

A fantasy writer’s magic system changes rules between acts. The cause is mundane: the conversation where she defined the rules had scrolled far out of view by the time she drafted the finale, and nothing was carrying that definition forward.
